Arsenal’s five signings thus far are no better deals than the coming of manager, Unai Emery, the club’s legend, Robert Pires thinks.

Pires believes the club’s employment of the former Sevilla and PSG manager is the best business they have so far, in a long time.

The signings of goalkeeper Bernd Leno from Bayer Leverkusen; Lucas Torreira of Uruguay; 19-year-old Matteo Guendouzi; defender, Sokratis Papastathopoulos and free agent, Stephan Lichtsteiner, are shadows of Emery’s signature on the Emirates emblem.

“The best signing for me is Unai Emery, the manager. Of course I believe in the players, and especially the new players,” Pires told Sky Sports News.

The Spaniard replaced Wenger after 22 years at the helms. He is tasked to shoulder the responsibility of winning back the affections of fans with good results.

Out with the Old, in with the New: Arsene Wenger shakes hands with his replacement at Arsenal, Unai Emery.

“But for Emery it’s very important to start very well. He knows he’s at a big club, and has a lot of pressure, but I think he has a big character and spirit.

“He won in Spain. He won in France. He has a lot of experience and I hope for him and Arsenal that he is successful with the club.”

Pires spent six years with Arsenal and was part of the 2004 triumphant ‘Invincibles’ Gunners squad under Arsene Wenger.

Robert Pires won the EPL and FA Cup at Arsenal playing six seasons in the club under Arsene Wenger.

Reacting to his former boss at Arsenal, Wenger’s report of ‘regrets’ over the many years at the club, Pires asks the club fans to appreciate the 68-year-old who left in 2018.

“I know Arsene Wenger, he’s a very good guy and a great manager, and everybody knows he spent a lot of time at Arsenal because he’s in love with this club.

“He had a lot of pressure on his shoulders, so sometimes you need to say thank you very much for everything, but I need a rest.

“For me, it was a big pleasure to work with him. I learned a lot and reached my best football with Wenger. We won the title which everybody knows is very tough here.

“The most important thing for Arsenal fans is to say, ‘Thank you very much for everything, Arsene Wenger’.”

Emery is faced with the tough challenge of returning Arsenal to the Champions League after the club missed out of a top four finish in the league.

Arsenal kick starts the season against visiting Manchester City on August 12.
