Serena Williams and husband, Alexis Ohanian, are not throwing any birthday celebration for their daughter who turns one this Saturday.
The 23-time Grand Slam winner became pregnant with Alexis Olympia outside wedlock but later solemnised the union before delivery.
Serena whose husband is not of her religious belief declared that there will be no birthday ceremony for Olympia because they are Jehovah’s Witnesses.
“Olympia doesn’t celebrate birthdays,” Williams declared in a US Open Press Conference
“We’re Jehovah’s Witnesses, so we don’t do that.”
The religious sect (Jehovah’s Witnesses) do not celebrate birthdays, Christmas and Easter because they “believe that such celebrations displease God.”
Some fans think that the decision to not celebrate Alexis’ birthday is a hypocritical one considering that she got pregnant outside wedlock.
FAN 1: “She’s a Jehovah witness and got pregnant prior to marriage and then married outside of the faith.,,yet, she feels the need to follow this principle which is vaguely biblical based, in that, it is not mentioned in the scriptures, save only in disastrous outcomes celebrated by the unfaithful, but no commandment not to do so.”
FAN 2: “Apparently, they don’t believe in marriage first, either.”
