“When a very substantial offer comes in you have to consider it,” AS Roma Sporting Director, Ramón Rodríguez Verdejo popularly known as Monchi.
Alisson’s deal was agreed with Liverpool on Wednesday, making the Brazilian the most expensive goalkeeper in the world after Gianluigi Buffon in 2001 and Ederson in 2017.
“We weighed up the pros and cons and decided to speak to Liverpool,” Monchi was quoted on the club’s twitter.
He has assured fans of the Italian club that the sale of Alisson is in no way a lack of ambition by the club which has already signed some other players to boost its title fight in the coming season.
“Selling Alisson would not show a lack of ambition. For me, ambition is about doing the right thing after thinking everything through.
“I came here to build a strong team, not just for one year but for many years to come – and I’m 100% sure that will be the case.” “I came here to build a strong team, not just for one year but for many years to come – and I’m 100% sure that will be the case.”
Monchi spoke at the unveiling of the club’s new signing, Justin Kluivert, on Thursday, saying: “I understand the fans’ view. I want them to know we’re working to build a stronger team. Some people never thought we’d be able to sign Kluivert. The same goes for Pastore. Perhaps today is tough for some fans, but we’ve brought in top players.”
Kluivert (£15.16m from Ajax), Javier Pastore (£21.8m from PSG) are players just signed by the club.
Monchi confirmed that Alisson is in Liverpool to discuss personal terms
“We haven’t finalised anything yet [with Alisson]. But it is true that the negotiations are advanced and he’s over in Liverpool now.” “We haven’t finalised anything yet [with Alisson]. But it is true that the negotiations are advanced and he’s over in Liverpool now.
