Nigerian Duo Help Portuguese Club To 13th Title

Nigerian table tennis duo of Aruna Quadri and Bode Abiodun helped club, Sporting, to their fourth Portuguese Cup with teammate,

They achieved the feat in the absence of captain, Joao Monteiro but had Diogo Carvalho as they beat ADC Ponta do Pargo for the fourth consecutive title.

Quadri and Abiodun were just coming out of a defeat in the hands of Borussia Dusseldorf in  the European Table Tennis Union (ETTU) Champions League.

It was a re-energised Quadri who started the onslaught for Sporting with a 3-1 (7-11, 11-1, 11-9, 11-9) bashing of Énio Mendes, Carvalho increased the lead for Sporting with a convincing 3-1 (9-11, 11-7, 11-8, 11-3) win over Saheed Idowu. Abiodun completed the rout for Sporting with a 3-0 (14-12, 11-5, 11-5) victory over Vítor Amorim.

Saturday’s win makes it the 13th title for the Lisbon based club – the best feat by any Portuguese side.

Sporting look to bank on the win for positive energy as they prepare to host Czech Republic side, TTC Ostrava in this week’s ETTU Champions league.

“We are indeed looking forward to the Champions League match on October 11 at home and we hope that this win will give us the needed motivation to do well against the visiting Czech side.

The club sits bottom of Group A in the league but hopes to rediscover form which took them to the semi-final in their maiden outing in the tournament.
