The best players in Women football will be honoured with the Ballon d’Or, when the award will hold in Paris on December 3, this year, organisers of the award have confirmed.
Ballon d’Or hitherto had been awarded to only male players since inception in 1956.
French Football Magazine, the organisers, announced that a total of 15 female footballers will be listed for the women’s prize, alongside a 30-man list for the male, on October 8.
“Women’s soccer is a booming discipline that deserves the same respect as men’s soccer,” said magazine editor in Chief Pascal Ferre.
“It’s coming to maturity and growing bigger. More than 760 million TV viewers watched games at the last women’s World Cup in 2015 – this did not happen by chance.”
FIFA teamed up with French Football Magazine to create the FIFA Ballon d’Or award in in 2010. The merger ended in 2016.
The world football governing has created its own award tagged Best FIFA Football Awards which has a Women’s category.
