The Video Assistant Referee, VAR, will be introduced to the UEFA Champions League from the 2019-2020 season, UEFA announced on Thursday.
The new addition will begin with the 2019 UEFA Super Cup and to be extended to the Euro 2020, 2021 Europa League season and the 2021 UEFA Nations League.
The body’s governing body president, Aleksander Ceferin expressed confidence UEFA can put up a robust system with the introduction of the technology.
“We are confident that introducing Video Assistant Referees in August 2019 will give us enough time to put in place a robust system and to train match officials to ensure an efficient and successful implementation of VAR in the UEFA Champions League, the world’s flagship club competition.”
VAR was used in the Russia 2018 World Cup where it helped curtail wrong calls and mistaken officiating.
